Hacking History: The Gale DH Skills Workshop

In association with Loyola University Chicago, University Libraries

Thursday, December 5, 2024

8:30am – 5pm

Loyola Information Commons, Loyola University Chicago Lake Shore Campus

How It Works:

  1. To open up the event to all experience levels, we’re hosting two concurrent groups: one for those new to DH and one for those who are more comfortable working with DH tools and methods. The groups will have similar concurrent schedules but feature different levels of training.
  2. When you preregister, you will self-identify your comfort level with DH. This will help determine into which group you’ll be placed. Upon arrival at the event, after welcome remarks and keynote, you’ll be randomly split into teams consisting of about five participants, whereupon each team will select a research topic from a predetermined list.
  3. With each team’s research topic chosen, team members will spend the day working together to explore digitized archives—using complimentary access to select Gale Primary Sources—then pull desired text into content sets on Gale Digital Scholar Lab, and use the datasets to generate visual analyses of their research findings. Expert facilitators will guide teams throughout the day.
  4. With research outcomes complete, each team will briefly “defend” their project to a panel of objective judges from Gale and the academic community. Judges will select one winning team for each of the two groups. Members of the winning team will receive substantial grand prizes.
  5. After the workshop, all participants will receive a download of the datasets their team worked from for future analysis. Additionally, all participants will receive individual access to Gale Digital Scholar Lab and select Gale Primary Sources for the rest of the month (through December 31, 2024).
  6. The goal? To learn from other DH researchers in a collaborative atmosphere, hone digital scholarship skills, and find out first-hand what the research experience feels like at the forefront of digital scholarship.

These DH product experts will lead the workshop and guide teams in their projects from start to finish.

Judging Criteria:

Judging of the completed projects for both groups will be based on four equally weighted criteria:

  1. Overall organization and clarity of the project
  2. Explanation of research methodology
  3. Inclusion of appropriate analysis and visualization
  4. Critical reflection

10 – Excellent work with clear process/methodological discussion, and detailed reflection, incorporating all evaluative criteria.

08 – Good work with satisfactory process and interpretative commentary, touching on all evaluative criteria.

06 – Solid content, perhaps lacking detail in commentary. May be missing one of the evaluative criteria.

04 – Some weaknesses or gaps in methodological and/or reflective content. May be missing two evaluative criteria.

02 – Gaps in methodology or limited/no reflection on process and outcomes. May be missing more than two evaluative criteria.
