Gale’s Digital Humanities User Engagement Program is a reflection of how much we truly value user feedback, and look to centre the voices and needs of our users when developing resources. Running for several years now, we greatly value the chance to ensure we're developing resources in ways that best support teaching and research.

The program is also a chance for instructors, librarians or doctoral students to learn more about Gale Primary Sources, Gale Digital Scholar Lab, and the product development process. Program members collaborate closely with the Digital Humanities Product team, going behind the scenes and contributing to product development.

The program runs for a year, with around 3 hours of participation each month, for which participants receive a payment of USD$1250*, paid in two instalments.

Applications have now closed, but will likely open again summer 2025.

*Currency adjusted to participant's location.

What is the Gale Digital Humanities User Engagement Program?

The Gale Digital Humanities User Engagement Program is designed to allow users to feed directly into our product development process. We want to hear feedback at all stages of development, and we hope the program will allow us to continue centering the voices and needs of our users in everything we do.

Program objectives:

  • Provide regular opportunities for instructors, librarians, and doctoral students to share their input throughout the platform development process for Gale Primary Sources and Gale Digital Scholar Lab.
  • Increase transparency of the Gale product development process.
  • Improve the user experience for instructors, researchers, and students working in the digital humanities.

  • Who can apply?

We welcome applications from instructors and doctoral students in the humanities or humanities-adjacent subjects with experience using Gale archives, or Gale Digital Scholar Lab for teaching or research. We also welcome applications from librarians who teach with either of the above resources or use them within their own research.

We welcome applications from anywhere in the world but please note that the DH Team members are based in the UK and Michigan (US), so interviews and other collaborative aspects of the program largely operate around those time zones.

The program is operated virtually so candidates should have access to a laptop with a reliable internet connection and Microsoft Teams.

  • What will be expected of participants?
    • Approximately 3 hours of engagement per month.
    • Work closely with the Gale Digital Humanities Product Team to provide input at all stages of the platform development process. This might include exploratory interviews with Digital Humanities team members, prototype validation, beta testing, usability testing, and more.
    • Share your experiences with your peers as and when such opportunities arise (e.g., contributing your thoughts to blog posts, white papers, conference materials etc.).

  • Application steps

Please note, applications for the 2025 program membership have now closed.

For those that applied: we will reach out to a longlist of candidates with a short task in October 2024. Following this, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with our product team, following which we will select our program cohort. We aim to start the programme on 2 January 2025.

If you have not heard from us by early November 2024, then unfortunately you have not been successful.
