Overview
Designed for the general reader, this six-volume set presents literature not as a simple inventory of authors or titles but rather as a historical and cultural field viewed from a wide array of contemporary perspectives. American History Through Literature, which is "new historicist" in its approach to literary criticism, endorses the notion that not only does history affect literature, but literature itself informs history. The set covers two time periods (each in three volumes): 1820 to 1870 (the early national era through the Civil War), and 1870 to 1920 (following the Civil War through the emergence of the United States as a world power at the end of World War I).
