Each chronological volume in this series presents original scholarly biographies of notable Americans deceased in a particular time period. More than 2,300 prominent individuals are covered in all. Articles range from 1,000 to 6,000 words and provide a concise summary of the individual's achievements. Also detailed wherever possible, are family members; educational background; names of spouses and marriage and divorce dates; addresses of residences; and cause of death and place of burial. Each volume contains cumulative occupation and birthplace indexes.
In addition to single volumes in print or electronic format, volumes 1-7 of The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives are available as one rich text-only database consisting of 5,000 pages and 2,300 narrative biographical profiles. The database consists of original editorial content published from 1998-2006.
