Overview
The Wampanoag, part of the Indians of North America series presents a fascinating portrayal of the history and culture of these native people. Possibly the first group of Indians to encounter European settlers, the Wampanoag saw pilgrims of the Mayflower enter their territory in 1620. By 1675, they joined other New England tribes in efforts to stop the English from further encroachment on their land. Today they have organized to fight for federal recognition and land rights.
