Overview
A collection of 16 research papers compiled after a conference held in May 2008 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The papers include the works of Li Fengmao, John Lagerwey, Tan Weilun, Cai Zhixiang, Wang Zhenzhong, Kenneth Dean, Payl R. Katz, Ye Mingsheng, Lv Pengzhi, and others. The two themes featured in this collection are "Jiaoyi (A ritual of Taoism): History and Status Quo" and "Local Religious Rituals". Religious rituals-the most important part of local religious culture in China's rural society-have integrated the elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, and also partly absorbed folk tradition, local culture, as well as sorcery.
