Overview
Discusses the debates on two styles of preaching by force and preaching by culture by the Roman Catholic missionaries (Jesuits) in the Far East during the sixteenth century by reviewing the expansion of Portuguese and Spanish influence in the East and the resulting disputes in the Far East. This study argues that the objective of colonialism is to expand political and economic power, while preaching spreads the gospel of God , and concludes that the spread of belief system should only be realized by cultural infiltration as espoused by Alexandre Valignano, the inspector of the Society of Jesus in the Far East.
