Finance

Personal Finance
Personal finance involves analyzing an individual’s or family’s current financial position, predicting short-term and long-term needs, and managing those needs within a budget. Personal finance may involve acquiring and using credit cards, monitoring credit scores, managing cash flow, purchasing insurance and mortgages, taking out loans, filing taxes, and planning for retirement. Personal banking—such as checking and savings bank accounts, IRAs, and 401K plans—are all considered part of personal finance.

Corporate Finance
Corporate finance is typically a group within a company that handles financial and investment decisions. The function of this area is primarily to maximize the value of the company through short-term and long-term financial planning. A company’s financial strategy may include capital investment decisions, management of current assets and funds, and inventory control. The corporate finance department must properly manage debt to ensure the company can grow; it is also important that the financial strategy ensures that the company has enough funds available to run its day-to-day operations, known as liquidity.

Public/Government Finance
Public, or government, finance relates to a government’s oversight of resource allocation, distribution of income, and stabilization of the economy in order to prevent market failure. The government primarily finances these activities through the collection of taxes, although a government may also secure loans from banks, insurance companies, or other governments. The government also raises money through the collection of fees at ports, airports, and other federal-operated facilities; fines given for breaking the law; revenue from licenses; and the sale of government securities and bonds.
