Industries and Companies

Learn about the business world of industries and companies. An industry is a way of classifying companies that are related based on their primary business activities. For example, the automotive industry includes car manufacturers and auto supply businesses. Companies with revenue streams from multiple sources are generally classified into an industry based on their largest source of revenue.

In the United States, industries are classified according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system in 1997. The NAICS allows investors and economists to compare companies within the same industry to evaluate the health of a company compared to similar companies, and for analyzing the factors and limitations to corporate profit growth. The global version, the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), is also commonly referenced.

Stocks within the same industry often rise and fall as a group because the same macroeconomic factors affect all members. These factors could include an increase in the price of raw materials, the imposition of tariffs, or a natural disaster. Companies within an industry may also gain or lose stock value individually, such as occurs when a company is embroiled in a scandal.
