This is the second DLB volume to cover Canadian writers whose careers were established between 1960 and the early 1980s. 'Their cultural context is a society in flux,' states volume editor W. H. New, '...concerned with empirical objects as much as with desperation and abstract dreams.' Although these authors use either English or French as their primary language of artistic expression, the languages intermittently connect or give way to idiomatic, African-American, and other lyrical speech patterns, as a means of literary discovery. Educational reforms and increased federal funding for education programs from the late 1950s and early 1960s spurred publishers to increase their output of nonfiction books for children. An increased interest in children's literature as a viable tool for classroom activities can be seen through the lives and works of these American writers, who take the task of communication with children seriously. American writing for children from 1960 to the present, especially poetry, picture books and nonfiction, reflects a healthy respect for the mind of the child. The major writers, illustrators and writer-illustrators from the period are represented in DLB Volume 61.

The bibliographies are duplicates as well, but the online version omits the helpful organization by source type. Some features of the print DLB are missing, including up-front identification of the DLB volume. Also missing are the invaluable facsimiles and photographs.
