While the professional biographer did not emerge until the nineteenth century, biography surfaced as a literary as well as artistic endeavor during the eighteenth century. Throughout this time, biographical writings were influenced by several precipitating factors. Society, for example, made its impact as biographies followed the distinct shift in the public's interest from high ranking members of society to a preoccupation with the common person.
