Throughout most of the time covered in this DLB volume, theater occupied an influential position in the cultural life throughout Central Europe. A period of relative financial security for the theater during this time resulted in dramas that reflected political, economic and social problems; and the theater often served as an arena for the political and ideological debates of the age.
